Arches Watercolor Paper
As a watercolor artist, one of the questions I receive most often is, "What watercolor paper do you use?" My answer is simple: Arches Watercolor Paper.
Over the years, I have experimented with many different brands and surfaces, but I always come back to Arches because of its consistency, durability, and beautiful texture. For my atmospheric watercolor paintings, I primarily use Arches 140 lb and 300 lb Rough Cold Press Watercolor Blocks in the 18x24 size.
One of the things I love most about purchasing the larger blocks is the flexibility they provide. A single 18x24 sheet can be cut into four 8x10 paintings or two 11x14 paintings. This allows me to create multiple pieces while maximizing the value of every sheet.
The rough texture is where the magic happens. Atmospheric watercolor painting relies heavily on soft edges, subtle transitions, and natural granulation. The rough surface helps create those beautiful broken washes that make clouds, fog, reflections, and distant landscapes come alive.
The 140 lb paper is wonderful for everyday painting and workshops. It accepts multiple layers beautifully and remains strong throughout the painting process. When I want something even sturdier, especially for larger washes or paintings requiring extensive layering, I reach for the 300 lb paper. The heavier weight minimizes buckling and allows me to focus entirely on painting.
